Childhood is a time of enormous growth — emotionally, physically, socially, and neurologically. It is also a time when children encounter experiences they don’t yet have the tools to understand or manage on their own. Worry, frustration, sadness, or big behavioral reactions are often signs that a child’s inner world needs support, not correction.
At Create Wellbeing Therapy Collective in San Diego, we offer child therapy for children ages 3–11 (preschool through elementary school). Our work supports emotional awareness, self-regulation, resilience, and healthy connection through an integrative, compassionate, and developmentally attuned approach. We focus on the whole child — not just symptoms or behaviors — and partner closely with families to create meaningful, lasting change.
What Is Child Therapy?
Child therapy is a form of mental health support designed specifically for children’s developmental stages, emotional capacities, and relational needs. Unlike adult therapy, which relies heavily on verbal processing, child therapy uses play, creativity, movement, and relational attunement to help children express and make sense of their experiences.
Young children often don’t yet have the language for complex emotions like grief, fear, shame, or anxiety. Instead, they communicate through play themes, body sensations, behavior, and imagination. Play therapy, art therapy, and music therapy give children a natural and safe way to explore emotions, process experiences, and build internal resources.
At Create Wellbeing, our child therapists draw from evidence-based and relational frameworks, including:
Interpersonal Neurobiology (Dr. Dan Siegel): Understanding how relationships shape brain development, emotional regulation, and resilience
Developmental Psychology: Tailoring therapy to each child’s cognitive, emotional, and social stage
Conscious Parenting (Dr. Shefali Tsabary): Supporting caregivers in moving from control to connection, fostering emotional authenticity and secure attachment
These perspectives remind us that every behavior is a form of communication — and therapy helps children feel seen, understood, and supported as they learn new ways of relating to themselves and others.
Our Integrative Model: Calm. Engage. Integrate.
All child therapy at Create Wellbeing Therapy Collective is guided by our three-stage model of care: Calm. Engage. Integrate. This framework mirrors both healthy nervous system development and how children naturally learn and grow.
CALM your distress.
Emotional Awareness & Regulation
We begin by creating safety — emotionally and physically. Children must feel safe before they can explore feelings or learn new skills.
In the Calm phase, therapy focuses on:
Identifying and naming emotions
Building emotional vocabulary
Recognizing body signals and early warning signs
Learning calming strategies such as breathing, grounding, and sensory regulation
Developing impulse control and basic problem-solving skills
These skills are introduced through play-based and experiential activities, helping children feel regulated, supported, and ready to engage. When the nervous system settles, children become more receptive to learning and connection .
ENGAGE your whole self.
Identity, Self-Esteem & Resilience
Once regulation skills are established, therapy moves into deeper engagement. In this phase, children explore who they are, how they see themselves, and how they respond to challenges.
The Engage phase supports:
Identity development and self-understanding
Recognizing strengths and building confidence
Developing compassionate and positive self-talk
Learning growth mindset and resilience skills
Managing stress, anxiety, transitions, and change
This phase is particularly helpful for children navigating school challenges, social difficulties, family transitions, or early experiences of anxiety or trauma. Children learn that mistakes are part of growth — not reflections of their worth.
INTEGRATE healing into your life.
Executive Functioning & Self-Management
In the final phase, children apply emotional and self-awareness skills to daily life. The Integrate phase focuses on executive functioning and self-management, essential skills for school, home, and relationships.
Children develop tools for:
Attention and focus
Task initiation and follow-through
Planning, organization, and time awareness
Working memory and responsibility
Applying regulation strategies during real-life stress
Skills are reinforced through routines, visual supports, games, and collaborative problem-solving, helping children carry therapeutic gains beyond the therapy room and into everyday life .
When to Consider Child Therapy
Child therapy can be helpful for both obvious struggles and more subtle concerns. Early support can prevent challenges from becoming more entrenched.
Therapy may be beneficial if your child:
Experiences frequent worry, sadness, or irritability
Has difficulty adjusting to school or new environments
Shows withdrawal, isolation, or regression
Exhibits changes in sleep, appetite, or mood
Struggles with friendships or conflict
Acts out through tantrums, aggression, or defiance
Is navigating family transitions, loss, or divorce
Has been exposed to stress, trauma, or bullying
Even if you’re unsure, an initial consultation can offer clarity and reassurance.
Benefits of Child Therapy
Child therapy offers benefits that extend far beyond symptom relief.
1. Emotional Regulation & Coping Skills
Children learn to understand emotions, express them safely, and recover from difficult feelings through co-regulation and creative modalities.
2. Improved Behavior & Social Connection
As children understand the “why” behind their behavior, impulse control, empathy, and social awareness naturally improve.
3. Strengthened Self-Esteem & Identity
Therapy helps children feel validated and accepted, building confidence and a healthy sense of self.
4. Trauma Processing & Emotional Healing
Play-based and trauma-informed care support children in regaining safety, trust, and emotional balance after difficult experiences.
5. Improved Family Communication
Parents learn co-regulation tools and new ways of responding that strengthen the entire family system.
6. Long-Term Resilience
Research shows that early emotional support improves mental health outcomes, supports healthy brain development, and reduces the long-term impact of stress .
How Parents Are Involved
Children heal best in the context of relationships. Parents and caregivers are an essential part of therapy.
We collaborate with families to:
Understand what behaviors are communicating
Learn supportive responses and healthy boundaries
Practice co-regulation and mindfulness skills
Receive ongoing feedback and guidance
Therapy becomes a shared journey — not something a child does alone.
